Preventing Prostate Cancer

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men. In fact, only skin cancer is more common. Over 200,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, and one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime.

But, there is some good news about prostate cancer, too. Of the one in six men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, only one in 34 will die from the disease. And, death rates from prostate cancer are declining because of earlier detection and better treatments. Prostate cancer is usually a slow growing form of cancer, making it an excellent target for prevention.

Who Gets Prostate Cancer?

While doctors don’t fully understand exactly what causes prostate cancer, there are some risk factors that do increase a man’s likelihood of developing this disease.

Age – Most men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer are over the age of 65. By the time a man reaches the age of 80, his chances of getting prostate cancer are greater than 50%. However, at this age, prostate cancer is often not fatal, because it grows so slowly that other health factors are more significant.

Ethnicity –Doctors do not understand why, but African-American and Hispanic men are at a greater risk for prostate cancer than Caucasian men.
Asian and Native American men have the lowest risk for developing this disease.

Diet – Diets high in saturated fats and low in fruits and vegetables increase a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer. Conversely, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, high in anti-oxidants and low in saturated fats reduces a man’s risk. Some foods that are particularly thought to be important in decreasing your risk of prostate cancer include:

• Soy

• Tomatoes – the lycopene in tomatoes is a powerful anti-oxidant and is thought to be particularly effective in preventing prostate cancer.

• Omega 3 Fatty Acids – such as those found in salmon and mackerel

• Vitamin D

• Selenium

Family History – A man’s risk for developing prostate cancer is greater when he has had a father or brother who has developed the disease. This is especially true if his relatives developed the disease at a young age.

How Can I Prevent Prostate Cancer?

Well, obviously diet is of significant concern in preventing prostate cancer. Make certain that your diet is low in saturated fats and high in fruits and vegetables. Stick to lean cuts of meat and be sure to get your fair share of fish that is rich in omega 3 fatty acids.

Another important aspect of protecting your prostate health is seeing your doctor. Currently, there are two ways of testing for prostate cancer. The first is a simple digital rectal exam. Most men will have this exam as part of a regular physical beginning after age 40.

In this test, the doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger in the anus and manually feels the prostate gland. The doctor can feel if the prostate is enlarged, or if lumps can be felt. This is an important exam, but it’s not perfect, because the doctor can only feel the bottom and sides of the prostate gland. There could still be problems with the top of the gland, or there could be tumors too small to feel.

The second test is called a PSA (prostate specific antigen) test. This is a blood test that checks the level of a protein made by the prostate. A normal prostate makes just a little of this protein, but when a man has prostate cancer, he typically produces very high levels of PSA.

Finally, along with your healthy diet, consider adding green tea. Green tea has been shown in many studies to prevent some forms of cancer, prostate cancer among them. There has been a fairly wide body of research on this subject, as well as on the ability of other foods and vitamins (such as the ones listed above) to prevent prostate cancer.

The Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial is a document that examines all of these possible preventers, and looks at the evidence that exists to support their effectiveness. This report has been published by the UK Tea Council and covers much of the research that supports the theory that green tea can prevent prostate cancer. In addition, this report discusses the strides made in prostate cancer prevention, and why this cancer in particular should be a target for prevention, rather than treatment.

Men often assume that at some time in their lives they’ll be facing prostate problems, or possibly prostate cancer. And, it is still a common health issue that many men will face in their life time. But, if all men can practice some simple prevention techniques, such as eating a healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables and green tea, and visit their doctor regularly, it’s very possible that we can even further reduce the number of men who suffer prostate cancer.

Breast Cancer Treatment Options - Facing Your Fears And Moving Ahead

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

After breast cancer diagnosis, time is of the essence to ensure recovery. Digest the news; then start learning, so you’re comfortable with your informed choices for breast cancer treatment.

Building Your Team

Before choosing surgery, you build a breast cancer treatment team. You need surgeons, oncologists, anesthesiologist, and radiologist. If you’re able, you are the leader of this team. You have to live with the choices made.

Breast surgeon - recommends and performs breast surgery such as mastectomy or lumpectomy under general anesthesia, and a sentinel node biopsy.

Oncologist - also recommends which surgical option is best. Recommends chemotherapies and follows treatment.

Anesthesiologist - usually on hospital staff, unless you want to choose your own.

Radiologist - performs the sentinel node biopsy (where 2-3 lymph nodes in the armpit or breast are surgically removed) is also on hospital staff.

Plastic surgeon - performs reconstruction if you want it, during or well after mastectomy.

Radiation oncologist - manages radiation therapy. Wait till after surgery to find.

First Breast Cancer Treatment: Surgery

Lumpectomy - usually recommended when there is a single, small lump. The lump and the margin around it are surgically removed under general anesthesia.

* Advantage: You have a small scar, usually.

* Disadvantages: You undergo radiation therapy afterwards; because radiation can cause lumps, you may have more biopsies in the future.

Mastectomy - removes breast tissue, comprised mainly of fat, under general anesthesia. Surrounding tissues are undisturbed.

* Advantages: You need no further biopsies on that side; you probably avoid radiation therapy if cancer is detected early.

* Disadvantages: You have asymmetry, and this may temporarily affect sex life or self-image. With psychological adjustment or reconstruction, these disadvantages can disappear.

Breast reconstruction - during/after a mastectomy using techniques such as DIEP, where abdominal fat and skin are transferred to the chest, to shape a new breast. This is not cosmetic surgery; it’s part of treatment.

* Advantages: feeling and looking restored; getting a tummy tuck and a breast lift on the other breast.

Breast Cancer Treatment After Surgery

The oncologist considers the information from the various tests. The oncologist stages the cancer, and recommends various breast cancer treatments. The oncologist can refer you to a psychologist or support group to allay anxiety about treatment.

Radiation therapy - usually started after recovery from lumpectomy. It is precisely administered to the breast (and perhaps lymph nodes) in order to kill cancerous cells, while avoiding damage to the rest of the body. Sessions are a few minutes, once a day, 5 days a week, for 6 weeks.

* Short-term side effects: fatigue, breast soreness, redness, swelling.

* Long-term side effects: breast shrinkage, tanning, lumpiness.

Chemotherapy - started after all radiation is complete. Drugs which kill or disable cancer cells are given cyclically, with time off between treatments, for 3 to 6 months. The chemotherapy visit usually is outpatient, lasting 1 to 6 hours. Some drugs are taken orally at home, sometimes as a permanent regime.

* Side effects: hair loss, nausea/vomiting, nerve or muscle pain, infection, weight gain, fatigue, difficulty sleeping.

Hormone Therapy - taken orally at home; both treats and prevents recurrence in some cases.

Exercise, diet and lifestyle changes help recovery significantly.

Survival After Therapy

With 2 million breast cancer survivors in America, breast cancer is beatable. Breast cancer treatment requires internal fortitude to reach recovery. You emerge with relief, gratitude and hope.

Mesothelioma Treatments

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved Alimta (pemetrexed disodium) for use in combination with cisplatin for the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. It is the first drug approved for this condition.

Mesothelioma treatment can involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of the three. Malignant mesothelioma is, however, difficult to treat as it can spread quickly to nearby organs. Mesothelioma treatment is most successful if the disease is diagnosed at an early stage. A staging system is used to determine just how advanced the case is.

In stage 1, the disease has only spread as far as the pleura. At this stage, tests are done to make sure the cancer has not spread, and to check if the lungs and heart are functioning well. If the patient is young and healthy, aggressive surgery can be attempted. This is high-risk surgery and involves the removal of the pleura, the lung, the diaphragm and the pericardium. Radiation or chemotherapy is commonly done post-surgery to eliminate any remaining tumor cells. In heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy, surgery is followed by the direct administration of a chemotherapy agent, heated to between 40 and 48°C, in the abdomen. This can increase the penetration of the drugs into tissues. Moreover, the damage produced by heat is greater to cancerous cells than to normal cells.

In stage two of mesothelioma, the cancer has reached the chest wall. By stage three it has affected the diaphragm. In stage four there are signs of metastases spreading through the blood stream. If surgery is undertaken during these stages, it is generally only for relief of symptoms. A needle may be inserted into the chest to drain the fluid, relieving breathlessness and pain. Talc may be injected into the pleural space to stop fluid from accumulating. Or the pleura may be surgically removed to alleviate the pain. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can also be used to relieve the symptoms.

A Refreshing Way to Fight Cancer

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

(This article first appeared in Health Today magazine - healthtoday.net)

Lowering your cancer risk has never been this refreshing. More and more studies suggest that tea, tomato juice, carrot juice, red wine and soymilk contain compounds that can fight certain types of cancer.

TEA TIME
Tea contains polyphenols, which are natural plant antioxidants. Antioxidants have been shown to prevent free radical damage to DNA and other molecules. Polyphenols may prevent cancer by reducing abnormal cell growth and inflammation.

Green tea is very rich in polyphenols and has been associated with protection against lung cancer, stomach cancer, and its pre-cancerous condition, gastritis. A study in Japan found that regular consumption of green tea (more than three cups a day) might protect the body against recurrence of early-stage breast cancer.

Laboratory animals given different tea extracts, tea polyphenol mixtures, purified tea components and tea infusions exhibited lower incidence rates of cancer of the colon, esophagus, liver, stomach, lung, breast, pancreas and skin.

YOU’LL LIKE LYCOPENE
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a natural pigment that gives tomatoes their red color. Lycopene has potent antioxidant properties, and is believed to be the key to the tomato’s cancer-fighting powers.

Research shows that lycopene in tomatoes is absorbed more efficiently by the body if processed into juice, sauce, paste and ketchup. Temperature changes in the processing of tomatoes convert lycopene into a more absorbable form.

In the body, lycopene is deposited in the liver, lungs, prostate gland, colon and skin. Its concentration in body tissues tends to be higher than all other carotenoids, a class of natural fat-soluble pigments that give veggies and fruits their various hues (orange, red and yellow).

Studies have shown that people with a high intake of tomatoes or a high serum level of lycopene have a significantly lower risk of certain types of cancer, like prostate, lung and stomach cancers.

There is also evidence suggesting a lowered risk for cancers of the pancreas, colon and rectum, esophagus, oral cavity, breast and cervix.

In a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (March 2002), researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) found that eating tomatoes and tomato products may help men reduce their risk of prostate cancer. Men with higher levels of lycopene in their blood had statistically significant lower rates of cancer than did men with lower blood levels of lycopene.

“Previous studies have shown a relationship between tomato consumption and risk of cancer,” according to study lead author Edward Giovannucci, M.D., Sc.D. of BWH and HSPH. “This study, in which we carefully examined the full diet of study participants, provides us further evidence that increased consumption of tomatoes is associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer.”

WHAT’S UP, DOC?
Carrot contains the pigment beta carotene. Beta carotene has powerful antioxidant properties and can be converted to vitamin A. Both beta carotene and vitamin A are rich sources of antioxidants.

If you’re an urban dweller, regular consumption of carrot juice may be good for you. Some studies show that carrots protect the lungs from environmental pollutants. Carrot juice is also recommended for those living in polluted cities or those whose work exposes them to toxic fumes (e.g., metal workers, those handling chemicals, cleaners, etc.) as well as smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke.

A word of caution, though: Excessive intake of beta carotene can turn the skin and whites of the eyes to an orange-yellow color.

CHEERS TO GOOD HEALTH
Red wine contains a strong anticancer agent known as quercetin, a flavonoid found in fruits, flowers and vegetables. Flavonoids have antioxidant properties that help protect against disease, inflammation and allergic reactions.

Quercetin may be beneficial in the treatment of skin cancer and may help prevent other cancers such as those of the ovary. Red wine is one of the primary dietary sources of quercetin. Research on quercetin and its purported health benefits continues.

Remember: Drink moderately.

SOY GOOD
Soy comes from soybean, a legume native to China. The health benefits of soy come, in part, from a group of compounds known as isoflavones. Soy isoflavones are plant estrogens (phytoestrogens). Similar in chemical structure to human estrogen, they bind to estrogen receptors around the body. However, soy phytoestrogens are much weaker, which is why scientists believe soy foods may help prevent breast cancer. One prominent isoflavone is genistein, which is believed to inhibit cancer cell and tumor growth.

A diet rich in soy is also linked to a lowered risk of prostate cancer.

Several animal studies have shown that soy isoflavones reduce the growth of prostate tumors.

To incorporate more soy into your diet, substitute soymilk for cow’s milk by the glass (8 ounces of soy milk contains 20 mg of isoflavones) or mix soy protein power into milk, juices, shakes and smoothies.

MAKE PREVENTION DELICIOUS
Fighting cancer can be delicious, fun and inexpensive. We recommend a good blender or mixer and a hefty stock of fresh tomatoes and carrots. Start looking for recipes that let you experiment with other fruits or vegetables. If you want to make your own soymilk, check out your local appliance stores for soymilk makers. In fighting cancer, prevention is still the key. “Prevention and early detection are still the most important and effective weapons in the battle against cancer,” says Nenette Umali, senior clinical dietitian at the St. Luke’s Medical Center. With these healthful thirst quenchers, cancer prevention can certainly be a refreshing undertaking.

Mesothelioma Treatment - Surgery

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Surgery is an important step in confirming and knowing the nature of the cancer. It can be conducted on patients with the combination of adjuvant chemotherapies and radiations, before and after the surgery.

Pleurectomy:
The most common surgery for Mesothelioma treatment is pleurectomy, in which doctors open the patient’s chest and remove the excessive fluid or tumor from the lining of the lungs (pleura). Although this procedure controls the accumulation of fluid and decreases pain, it still is not a cure. On the other hand, if the tumor is in its initial form and has not extensively grown, a pleurectomy can increase the survival rate of a patient when combined with chemotherapy and radiation. Additionally, a pleurectomy can be performed on patients with less-approving health conditions and has lower mortality rate than the extrapleural pneumonectomy.

Extrapleural Pneumonectomy (EPP):
Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) is an invasive and severe form of surgery conducted on patients with Mesothelioma. In this treatment, parts of the lungs, the pleura (the lining of the lung), the pericardium (lining of the heart) and the hemi-diaphragm, along with the tumor cells, are removed. It decreases the progression of Mesothelioma, while allowing a patient to breathe smoothly. It is usually conducted on patients with early stages of the cancer and when the tumor is in chest cavity. EPP is recommended for patients with good heart and lungs conditions, in order to endure the severities of the post-operative term. Though the surgery combined with chemotherapy and radiation gives promising results, it does not guarantee a cure. Researches have shown that patients treated with extrapleural pneumonectomy and therapies have a medium life span of 35 months after the surgery, compared to only 9 months of pleurectomy. Still, some doctors question the surgery for its high risks, which include internal bleeding, blood clotting, pneumonia, amassing of pus, respiratory failure and even death. Thus, many surgeons recommend the idea of pleurectomy instead of the technically complicated EPP.

Thoracentesis:
A minor surgery is often conducted on patients who cannot undergo EPP or pleurectomy, called thoracentesis. In thoracentesis, a thoracic surgeon inserts a needle into a patient’s chest to remove the excessive fluid built up in the lining of the lungs (pleura). This method neither cures nor decreases the cancer, but rather alleviate the painful symptoms of Mesothelioma. In some cases, talc or other agents are infused into a patient’s chests to scar the chest wall and help them breathe properly without letting the tumor to increase, to some extent.

Paracentesis:
Paracentesis is a similar method of using a needle to extract fluid, but from the abdominal section of the body. It follows the same procedure of extracting fluid from the lining of the stomach or other abdominal organs. Patients with peritoneal mesoblog.org/” target=”_blank Mesothelioma can benefit from paracentesis surgery.

He Had My Back Covered

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

It was 7:20 Monday morning and I was so relieved to see that Mike, the radiation therapist, was already there preparing the radiation room. One more time I made my way through the huge ominous door averting my eyes from the large red letters that read “DANGER- DO NOT ENTER”. I headed for the cold steel table upon which I was instructed to lie perfectly still so that the radiation therapist could line up the diagnostic x-ray machine with the tiny permanent ink dots that had been tattooed on my chest. This process allows for more precision in the delivery of the radiation thereby causing less damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.

Mike, with his usual calm, laid back manner always seemed to emit a quiet, confident, competent strength. He was humorous and attentive but, at first glance, I would not have called him sensitive. As I was to find out, Mike did not miss a thing. He could not have known that I failed all 4 years of high school PE because I would not undress for showers. Nor could he have known that at age seven I elected to have the entire series of rabbi shots administered into my back vs. the normal administration to the stomach. Bearing my stomach elicited intolerable feelings of vulnerablity . Like radar, Mike picked up on my fear even though I tried my hardest to appear “together”. Truth be told, I was so scared during all 33 threatments that I was grateful to just not drool.

So it was that when the right side of my chest was exposed, it felt exactly like the right side of my back when exposed as both areas are flatter than a pancake. Conversely, when the left side of my chest became inadvertently exposed, I would instantly feel embarrassed, vulnerable and sometimes even ashamed. Most of the technicians’ would endeavor to replace the cover when it fell from the right breast. After awhile it became a tedious task and they were trying to get their job done as efficiently as possible because their waiting room was filled with weary women wearing but a thin hospital gowns patiently awaiting their turn to proceed through the “DANGER DO NOT ENTER” room.

I never understood how it happened but by some mysterious cue, if my breast became exposed, Mike was back in the room as if he had some good reason to be there. He would nonchalantly put the cover back on my exposed breast. Once again my “back” was covered, my childhood monsters were soothed and I could breath again. As quick as Mike appeared he would disappear closing behind him the door that read “DANGER DO NOT ENTER”.

Of all the ways and means of extending appreciation and gratitude, thanking someone for keeping those intangable feelings of vulnerability and dignity intact, is among the most difficult to express. Nevertheless, in my book he exemplifies the very essence of professionalism and compassion effortlessly and without even a hint of solicitation of praise. Thank You, Mr. Mike and the entire staff at Olympic Medical Cancer Center.

Cancer: How Exceptional Patients Find Healing

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Power of the Mind

The main basic difference between medical science and holistic healing is the perception of what we are. The holistic view regards man as a trinity, made up of the body, mind and soul. Indeed, the body is only the physical case that houses the mind and soul. Medicine, however, is based on the philosophy proposed by Rene Descartes, a French mathematician and philosopher in the 17th century. He regarded man as a machine that obeys only the physical laws. The mind and soul play no roles in the body.

Given this conflicting view about man, it is therefore up to you to decide what you want to make out of yourself. You may believe that you are just a pile of chemicals, bones and flesh that has no mind and soul. Worry not, for like an old car, you can remove any worn-out parts of your body and replace them with some newer parts from somewhere, if you can. Hopefully by doing so, you can function better. BUT, can you?

I am reminded of an article in Newsweek (Special Issue 1999) about a man who had undergone a heart transplant. After everything is done, the man recovered very well. Modern technology had saved him. However, what surprised the cardiac surgeon was that the man with the new heart did not behave as he did before. He had the tendency to become suicidal.

From the holistic point of view, the mind is the root cause of problems. Carolyn Myss (in Creation of Health) says that cancer is created through excessive fear, guilt feelings, inability to cope with changes, self-hate and self-denial. Debbie Shapiro wrote (in The Bodymind Workbook): “Cancer appears to be the result of many years of inner conflict, guilt, hurt, grief, resentment, confusion or tension surrounding deeply personal issues. It is connected to feelings of hopelessness, inadequacy and self-rejection.”

According to Freud, the mind is an iceberg and only one-third floats above water. However, Avni Sali, a professor of surgery at the University of Melbourne, Australia, said: “But I’m sure that in cancer patients it’s probably 10%. Most of it is under water.” Paramahansa Yogonanda said that “there is an innate connection between the mind and the body. Whatever you hold in your mind will be produced in the physical body. … all diseases have their origins in the mind. The pains that affect the physical body are secondary diseases.”

The holistic healers view pain, sickness or the disease of the body as a signal that there is an imbalance within, perhaps due to conflicts of emotions and thoughts deep down within us, and is threatening our survival. This disease represents a wake-up call for us to do something in order to heal ourselves. However, few ever understood this message.

Contrary to medical views, body-mind healers have pointed out that:

1) The healing power of the body is within us. There is a physician within us and this power heals us absolutely.

2) Many of us are ignorant or are unaware of our own body’s healing potential.

3) Many of us block ourselves off from this potential, preferring to trust others whom we think can cure us rather than trust our own Infinite Intelligence within.

4) Many of us create unhealthy circumstances by thinking negatively and harbouring self-denying thoughts that eventually make us sick. We fail to recognise that these are the root causes of our many illnesses.

5) We are unaware that from the day we are born, we have been bombarded with negative suggestions. Negativity begets illness.

The seat of our real mind is the subconscious. Joseph Murphy (in The Power of Your Subconscious Mind) wrote that we view our world through thoughts in the subconscious mind. “Think good and good will follow, think evil, evil follows. Change your thought and you change your destiny.” Ralph Emerson said that “man is what he thinks all day long.”

From the above, we can conclude that the very first step in healing is for every cancer patient to recognise the influence of his own mind on his illness and recovery process. Many a time, we ask patients if they carry any emotional baggage or harbor any unresolved emotional conflicts within them. Invariably the answer would be: “No, no, I have no emotional problems at all.” They simply do not want to admit or discuss them, perhaps for fear that people know their secrets or they do not see the relevance or relationship between unresolved personal emotions and their cancers. After all, in schools we are taught that illness is caused by some kind of bug, virus or germ and it has nothing to do with the mind. Most patients would tell me that whatever problems they have are all old issues and have long been forgotten.

However, as we began to probe deeper, some of them just broke down and cry. So, my first advice to all cancer patients is to be honest with your own self, especially your subconscious mind. Think again, do you carry any baggage? Remember that you are not just a machine – devoid of mind or soul. You are sick because “something inside is eating you up.”

Let me suggest a list of some active steps that you can take to heal your mind, your soul and lastly, your body and its cancer.

1) Think positively: as you think, so you become!

According to Susan Bannerman, a clinical psychologist working with cancer patients (in As you think, so you become. Proc. 1st World Congress on Cancer, Sydney, 1999, pg. 199): “Illness is a reflection of a person’s negative perception and self-defeating ways of thinking. Hatred, envy, selfishness, jealousy, self-judgement, self-doubt, self-criticism, lack of self-respect, feeling of unworthiness, etc.” All these are negative and destructive thoughts. Do not harbour them for they do not help you at all. On the other hand, cultivate positive attitudes of love, joy, happiness, sharing, caring, self-esteem and self-confidence.

When you see a glass of carrot juice that is not filled up to the brim: how would you see it — as half full or half empty? Our perceptions of many situations can be either negative or positive. Learn to see things positively. Alex is a colon cancer patient. He told us: “I do not consider myself taking herbs. I just drink tea and it brings me a lot of good”. On the other hand, we have patients telling us: “Yuck! The tea tastes horrible!” Think for yourself, do you think you will benefit from drinking a ‘yucky’ drink?

What messages do you think the following remarks convey to you?

“Are your herbs hygienic?”

“You mean I to boil the herbs? I have no time to do so. It is so cumbersome!”

“The herbs are so bitter!”

“My doctor said this … My doctor said that …”

“I have this problem for such a long time already, my doctor said there is no more cure…”

You may want to tell us: “No, I can’t change. Take me for what I am.” We remember one young lady who had breast cancer. She hated her father very intensely. The sight and thought of her father worked her up so much so that she felt pains in the lump of her breast. We told her to go home and hug her father and love him. She was adamant at sticking to her “guns” saying: “No, I hate him.” We then told her: “The problem is this. It is you who have to suffer and perhaps die. It is not your father who suffers if you hate him.” Again here, patients have a choice, to embark on the healing journey rightly or to be left in misery. In our Centre, there is a quotation: “when you hate people, the only person who gets hurt is you, because most people you hate don’t know. And the rest of the world don’t care.”

To cultivate positive thinking is simple and easy. It is just like letting go of your baggage. Put it down! This requires no skill at all but you must have a loving heart. Do not insist on hanging onto your baggage. You have a choice. And again, our advice is: Let go!

2) Free yourself of negative thoughts.

Many negative thoughts are ingrained into our subconscious mind and they become a part of us. You and I have similar problems. And more often than not, we do not even know that these negative thoughts ever exist or are causing us all the problems. We are the product of our environment and the experiences of our lives. So to be able to free ourselves from these negative thoughts we must first and foremost be aware and recognise that these negative thoughts are in us. If we keep insisting that they are non-existent, then there is no reason for change or wanting to be free. If we admit that negative thoughts are our problems, the next step is to consciously correct them and replace them with positive thoughts. Keep on doing this correction like cultivating new habits. With time these good values stick in our mind. Always tell ourselves that we want to change and are capable of doing so. In time we will see that we do change. Remember, you need not be trapped in your past. Life is not living in the past, or the future. It is living in the present.

Skin Cancer - Types-Causes-Symptoms and Treatment

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

In recent years, the incidence of skin cancer around the world has escalated and the condition now affects millions of people worldwide. The usual cause is prolonged exposure to the harmful ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. The risk is higher if anybody lives or takes vacations in areas with intense sun. The recent depletion of the ozone layer is thought to have played a part in increasing the incidence, because the ozone layer acts as a shield against harmful ultraviolet light. In addition, tanning booths, which use ultraviolet light, may cause this cancer. People who have fair skin are especially susceptible because they have low levels of melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its color and helps protect it from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

The four essential types are;

. Melanoma, a pigmented skin tumor that is quite serious and may be life-threatening.

. Basal cell carcinoma, the most common skin tumor, which is locally invasive and destructive (it destroys tissue in the immediate area), but is usually does not spread or result in death.

. Squamous cell carcinoma, which is three times rarer than a basal cell carcinoma but behaves in a similar manner.

. Bowen disease, a cousin of the squamous cell carcinoma but more superficial, involving only the outer most layer of the skin.

The typical basal cell carcinoma is an elevated round-oval, pearl-like bump with some red coloration due to fine red blood vessels going across or into it. Sometimes several small bumps form a circle. They bleed easily and sometimes ulcerate. The squamous cell carcinoma is less well defined, has uneven, poorly visualized borders and may be a scaly, crusted, red elevation with a rough surface. Bowen disease usually is a red or pink plaque-like elevation with very clear borders. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma tend to occur on sun-exposed sites of the skin.

Causes: The cause of cancer is unknown. It is thought, however, that squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are related to an accumulation of sunlight over a lifetime. People with light complexions have these tumors more often than people with dark complexions. Malignant melanoma is believed to be associated with numerous severe sunburns during childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood. It, too, occurs more commonly in lightly pigmented people, especially those with blue or green eyes, freckles and almost white skin. A tendency to develop melanoma seems to run in families.

Symptoms:

. Skin lesions with persistent ulceration or bleeding

. Persistent skin lesion that changes size, shape, or color (skin changes).

Diagnosis: A Biopsy should be done on any suspicious skin lesions. When evaluating pigmented skin lesions, the physician usually looks for good and bad signs. Bad signs include

. Uneven pigmentation or coloration of the lesion

. Irregular borders

. Asymmetry

. Marked elevation

. Large size (bigger than a pencil eraser)

Treatment:

Medical Treatment: It required Surgical Treatment.

Surgical Treatment: All the types described above can be treated by means of excision and removal of the tumor. Surgical removal results in a better than 90 percent cure rate for nonpigmented tumors (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and Bowen disease). Alternative methods for destroying the cancer include using liquid -nitrogen freezing (cryosurgery) or scraping with a curette and burning the tissue with electric cautery (electro desiccation and curettage).

The treatment of melanoma depends upon the thickness of the tumor and the depth of invasion when examined with the microscope. When the tumor is thin and superficial, excision examination of the lymph nodes draining the skin area and chemotherapy.

Prevention: prolonged sun exposure increases the risk of this cancer, so limiting exposure to the sun is the best prevention, particularly for those with fair complexions. A Weakened Immune System Leads To Cancer - A Strong Immune System Seeks Out To Destroy Cancer Cells

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

For most of our lives, the immune system deals with cancer cells by killing them off as they develop, that is its job. On the other hand, when cancer has developed and medical treatments are preventing the immune system from functioning normally, it is not only wise to have a plan for strengthening the immune system, it is vital.

When waging war against cancer, or any ailment taking steps to bolster the immune system is half the battle — especially if medical treatments are impairing the functionality of the immune system and making the body more acidic.

Many natural supplements support the immune system. It is important to find the ones that work best and to use them. Squandering resources on products that will not get the job done, or not taking enough, is not only foolish — it could also be fatal.

Worldwide, one of the best nutritional products on the market today is the liquid supplement called VIBE — from Eniva. Let’s look at it this way — If you wanted to build a house that would hold up against the elements and endure the test of time, undoubtedly you would lay a strong cement foundation.
One component that makes concrete stronger, more durable and easier to work with, is an additive called “fly ash”. Without “fly ash”, the foundation would eventually crumble and break down. It would just be a matter of time.

The human body is no different. If you want to maintain a strong and healthy body, it is vital to have an immune system that does what it is supposed to do — ward off disease and sickness. In today’s world, and more now than any other time in history, we are subjecting our bodies to more and more toxins, poor quality food sources and substandard diets

VIBE, the liquid multi-vitamin mineral & antioxidant supplement was designed to support healthy body structure and function by providing essential dietary nutrients –a significant part of nutritional programs for those with unique nutritional and health challenges. VIBE is the “fly ash” (so to speak) of the immune system.

Two Simple Ideas for Preventing Colon Cancer

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Colon cancer starts with colon polyps. Polyps are growths in the inner lining of your colon walls. They are formed when the inner lining is irritated or attacked by fecal matter toxins. When you have colon polyps, you dramatically increase your risk of getting colon cancer.

To prevent getting colon cancer you need to prevent getting polyps. If you have polyps then you need to prevent them from becoming cancerous.

Here are some ideas that you can use in preventing colon cancer whether you have or do not have polyps.

Polyps occur when your fecal matter is toxic and becomes stagnant. When your fecal matter stops moving in your colon, then toxic matter in the fecal matter comes in contact with your colon wall. It is this colon area that becomes irritated and over time weakens. As inflammation sets in and irritation continues, toxins are absorbed into the colon wall and a growth occurs. This growth will continue as long as you continue to have toxic fecal matter and constipation.

Here are two things that can help you from creating and irritating polyps.

First eliminate any form of constipation. You have constipation if you don’t have at least two bowel movements daily when you have three meals a day. Determine how long it takes for your food to pass through your body. A good rule of thumb is, it should take about 24 hours for food to travel from your mouth and out your anus.

After you eat breakfast in the morning, drink 6 – 8 oz of any juice with 2 oz of liquid chlorophyll. You can use 2 oz of red beet juice if you prefer. Then check when you start to see either green or red stools. This is your colon transit time. If it takes more than 24 hours then you need to reduce this time.

Preventing colon cancer requires that fecal matter move through your colon without remaining at one spot for too long.

The second thing you can do to prevent colon cancer is to change your fecal matter toxic level. Two things that make your fecal matter more toxic are undigested food and carcinogenic chemicals.

Since, most processed foods such as breads, packaged foods, cooked foods, processed meats, and pasteurized liquids lack digestive enzymes, your body is unable to digest all of the food that you eat. When undigested food reaches the colon, it is decomposed by bad bacteria and becomes highly toxic.

To correct this toxicity, start eating more raw foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are filled with enzymes. Try ten servings a day. It’s a lot isn’t it? But, that what we need to stop colon cancer or other colon irritations.

Next, read food labels and avoid those foods, as much as possible, which contain excessive preservative, coloring, dyes, fillers, and food stabilizers. There are hundreds of chemicals that are added to your food which help to keep the food from falling apart and decaying. Many of these chemicals are not digested in the small intestine and move into the colon where then make the fecal matter more toxic.

These are two steps that you can start applying for preventing colon cancer. If you have polyps, then these steps will help to keep them in check and reduce your risk of getting colon cancer.
